Private Charles Kirby is reputed to have guarded German POWs at Somerleyton Hall in Suffolk. This photograph was taken in Lowestoft, which adds more credibility to this family lore. He appears to be wearing a Suffolk Regiment cap badge – he transferred to the Royal Defence Corps in 1916 – so this dates from the first half of the war. His previous military experience is depicted in the medal ribbon for the Queen’s South Africa Medal and the Long Service and Good Conduct stripes on his lower left arm, representing twelve years’ service (© the author).
